What is Axial spinal traction?
Axial spinal traction is a linear spinal decompression technique performed along the body’s vertical axis—from the top of the head to the tailbone. This method does not twist or rotate the cervical spine. Instead, it applies a controlled and stable traction force that helps decompress the spine, promote relaxation, and enhance nerve function and blood circulation.
What are the Benefits?
-
Reduces nerve compression and muscle tension
-
Releases spinal joint pressure and increases disc space
-
Helps alleviate headaches, neck stiffness, and upper back tension
-
Supports spinal function and circulation in patients with neurological disorders (such as ALS)
Is axial spinal Traction Safe?
Yes. When performed by a professionally trained doctor, axial spinal traction is safe.
We use specialized traction equipment—such as a cervical harness and stabilizing pads—to keep your head and neck in the correct position and control the traction force. The doctor adjusts the force based on your body condition and can stop the procedure at any time.
What Does It Feel Like?
-
Typical Sensations: You may hear a "pop" sound during traction, which is a natural release of joint pressure. Some patients describe a feeling of elongation and relief along the entire spine.
-
Common Reactions: Some patients feel temporary fatigue or deep relaxation afterward, which is a sign of muscle tension release.
If you feel any discomfort, please tell your doctor immediately so we can adjust accordingly.
What If I Feel Nervous Before My First Session?
That’s completely normal.
We begin with a lighter traction force to let you experience the movement gently. Once you are more comfortable, we gradually increase the intensity.
If you’re still unsure, we can demonstrate the technique using a model, show you an instructional video, or let you observe another patient’s session (with their permission).
Who Should Not Receive Axial Spinal Traction?
-
Patients with severe osteoporosis
-
Recent neck injury or surgery
-
Uncontrolled high blood pressure
-
Certain central nervous system disorders (please consult your doctor)
Who Can I Talk to If I Have Questions?
We encourage you to ask any questions you may have. We will patiently explain everything you need to know to ensure you feel informed, safe, and confident before starting treatment.
Rest assured—our goal is to help you achieve the best results in a safe and relaxed environment.
